Gross Motor Skills To Expect

Advanced floor play & tummy time.

Expected Age Range: 3 months, or so.

At this stage, you’ll begin to notice your baby interacting in a more purposeful way with their hands and toys, and with you! This is what you can expect to see in each position:

On Their Back:

  • Your baby may start bringing their hands together at midline.

  • They may also start to bring their hands to their mouth.

  • When you grasp your baby’s hands and wrists and pull up to sit, they hold their head up.

  • They may begin holding a toy with both hands in midline.

On Their Side:

  • They start to manipulate toys with both hands.

On Their Tummy:

  • Your baby can lift their head 45-90 degrees and can hold without bobbing.

  • They can turn their lifted head to look in both directions.

  • Their elbows are most often placed under or in front of their shoulders.

  • They occasionally lift their shoulders and top of chest off the floor by pressing weight into their forearms.

  • Your baby may accidentally roll from tummy to side if they turn their head too far.
