Toy Suggestions

Intermediate floor play & tummy time.

Expected Age Range: 2 months, or so.

Start layering in some of these items during floor play and tummy time.

Many of the toy suggestions from Beginner Floor Play & Tummy Time are still relevant, such as: contrast cards, exercise ball, play mat, play gym, yoga mat, rattle, boppy, and pack ‘n’ play.

Ball for Mouthing

This teething ball is great for your baby to begin exploring with their mouth. It is easy for tiny hands to grasp onto tightly. At this stage, their grasp will likely be reflexive, but it will grow into an intentional grasp soon.

Crinkle Book

Playing with a crinkle book early on introduces the concept of cause and effect. This one also has a small mirror to attract your baby’s attention. Crinkle books are excellent for practicing visual tracking and providing entertainment during tummy time.

Linking Rings

This is what I look for in linking rings: hard plastic that makes a clinking noise when you shake them, a variety of textures, and a narrow width that is easy for babies to get their entire hand around for a tight grasp — that way you can practice pulling, too!

Rattle Ball for Grasping

The rings clinking on the posts of this rattle atom ball will attract your baby’s attention as they attempt to clutch and explore it. Introduce this toy in this early stage as a rattle, and then your baby will use it in later stages for more advanced grasping and manipulation.

Baby Safe Mirror

Babies can’t get enough of looking at themselves. Even at this early stage, the mirror is incredibly intriguing. You’ll want to use a baby safe mirror. This one has a clear reflection with minimal distortion, and there are high contrast pictures on the back.

Faces Board Book

Your baby is very into faces at this stage of the game. They love looking at you, looking in the mirror, and a baby faces board book is sure to keep their attention, too. Use it for visual tracking and entertainment during tummy time and side lying.

  • When you shop using the links above, Physical Therapy for Infants earns a very small portion of what you spend at no additional cost to you.

When curating a list of toys, I create a list of toys that I love first, and then I look to see if affiliate links are available for those items. Not the other way around. This way, I make sure I am recommending the items that I use and love.

The additional income from these affiliate links helps me be able to continue to put the hours in to create educational content that is free for families that cannot invest in paid materials.

  • Sustainability and mindful consumption are a big value of mine. I know that providing for and supporting a developing baby can bring a flood of new items into your home, many of which are essential. And while toy are tools for learning, discovery, and meaningful movement, I encourage you to be mindful in selecting the toys that are right for your family.

I encourage you to consider looking for some of these toys second-hand before purchasing new. If you decide to purchase new, using the Amazon affiliate links above, please consider using the AmazonSmiles program to give back.

I try to select toys that can be used for open ended play, which prolongs the lifespan of the use. If your family outgrows their toys, that’s a great time to donate them so they can benefit another child.
